OVERVIEW

In this session, Katherine Supiano will describe the development, application and value of Pre-Loss Group Support (PLGS) to reduce risk of PG in Dementia family Caregivers at risk for poor bereavement outcomes.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1.  Learners will articulate the challenges of caregiving at disease inflection points.   
  2.  Learners will apply best practices in family caregiver support that are congruent with each FCGs values and preferences 
  3. Learners will appraise approaches to anticipating and supporting the grief needs of FCGs. 

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Katherine Supiano, PhD, LCSW, F-GSA, FT, APHSW-C is a Professor Emeritus in the College of Nursing, and the past director of Caring Connections:  A Hope and Comfort in Grief Program at the University of Utah College of Nursing.  She has been a practicing clinical social worker and psychotherapist for over 45 years.  Her clinical practice has included care of older adults with depression and multiple chronic health concerns,  end-of-life care, and bereavement care. Dr. Supiano’s research is in clinical interventions in complicated grief, prevention of adverse grief outcomes, suicide survivorship, overdose grief and prison hospice. Dr. Supiano is a Fellow in the Gerontological Society of America, and a Fellow of Thanatology.

Target Audience: health and mental health professionals, graduate-level students, and those who work closely with bereaved people, like hospice administrators, clergy, and support group facilitators.

This is an Introductory to Intermediate course. There is no commercial support or conflicts of interest with this course.
