This one-day workshop is designed to provide a conceptual framework for understanding grief and adaptation to the death of a loved one, generally and in relation to Prolonged Grief. We include strategies and procedures for screening, diagnosis, and assessment of individuals with PG and discuss how to differentiate this condition from major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. We provide an overview of Prolonged Grief Therapy (PGT) and introduce some simple, practical procedures that you can use in your practice.
Learning Objectives
- Explain adaptation to loss and differences between acute, integrated, and prolonged grief to a friend or family member.
- Implement effective screening, diagnosis, and assessment procedures with bereaved clients
- Recognize differences between PGD, PTSD, and MDD
- List core study procedures of PGT
- Introduce and explain the use of a grief monitoring diary

In this two-day workshop, you will learn how to implement Prolonged Grief Therapy, a short-term, evidence-based treatment using active empathic listening, brief personalized interventions, companionship alliance, and a series of targeted procedures to help clients understand and accept grief and optimize their ability to manage emotional pain, think about the future, strengthen relationships with loved ones and others in their community, tell the story of the death, live with reminders of the loss, and connect with memories of the deceased.
Learning Objectives
- Explain the terms grief, adaptation to loss, and prolonged grief to a client
- Identify derailers/stuck points in a case evaluation
- Demonstrate to a client how to use the grief monitoring diary
- Analyze the organizing principles of personalized interventions: building alliance, addressing derailers, and facilitating adaptation
- Use the skills learned to work with a client to strengthen their relationships
- Apply the procedures of telling the story of the death or imaginal revisiting with a client
- Develop a list of avoided situations for a client and guide them to approach them gradually
- Guide the client through questionnaires about positive and negative memories of the person who died.
- Explain the imaginal conversation procedure to a client.
- Utilize the strategies and procedures of aspirational goals work in practice with clients
