Although Prolonged Grief Treatment explicitly supports engagement in rewarding activities and progress toward aspirational goals, less is known about how positive emotions themselves are experienced, regulated, and integrated with grief-related pain. Positive emotions may contribute to functioning and adaptation following bereavement, even as they coexist with sadness, yearning, and other difficult emotional experiences. Drawing on emerging theory and ecological momentary assessment research, this webinar will examine the daily dynamics of positive emotion following bereavement. Particular attention will be given to savoring, beliefs about positive emotion, continuing bonds, mixed and bittersweet emotional experiences, and the prospective relationship between positive emotion and everyday behavioral engagement. The webinar will conclude by considering how clinicians can support positive emotional functioning while honoring the complexity of grief.
Learning Objectives
- Describe key processes involved in experiencing and regulating positive emotion following bereavement.
- Summarize emerging evidence concerning the daily dynamics, mixed-emotion experiences, and behavioral significance of positive emotion across levels of prolonged grief severity.
- Identify clinical strategies for supporting positive emotional functioning among bereaved adults.
