This presentation provides a brief overview of Prolonged Grief Therapy (PGT), including its structure and core components. Through a clinical case presentation, attendees will examine the assessment and treatment of an adult who developed both Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) after two close family members died in the same traumatic accident. The presentation will focus on differentiating PGD from PTSD, collaboratively determining which condition to treat first, and navigating PGT when prolonged grief is associated with multiple deaths that occurred at the same time.
Learning Objectives
1. Differentiate the clinical features of Prolonged Grief Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder when symptoms overlap following a traumatic bereavement.
2. Apply clinical decision-making principles to determine treatment priorities when a client presents with co-occurring Prolonged Grief Disorder and PTSD.
3. Apply strategies for implementing Prolonged Grief Disorder Therapy when a client experiences prolonged grief related to multiple deaths that occurred at the same time, including selecting and sequencing the loss to address first in treatment.
