Perinatal Loss and Prolonged Grief Treatment: A case example

OVERVIEW This presentation will provide a brief overview of the different types of perinatal loss and birth trauma that therapists may encounter in their clinical work. The presenter will also discuss Prolonged Grief and its risk factors in clients who have experienced a perinatal loss. Then a case of a mother whose baby tragically passed in the NICU, “Michele” will be introduced along with her healing journey. The course of treatment will be described, including PGT procedures used and treatment outcomes. Lastly, the presentation will highlight special cultural and ethical considerations among the most at-risk of the perinatal population. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. Discuss the unique psychological and relational impacts of perinatal loss
  2. Identify risk factors for Prolonged Grief in the perinatal loss population
  3. Describe core procedures of Prolonged Grief Treatment, such as imaginal revisiting,g and their use with clients who survived birth trauma and/ or perinatal loss
ABOUT THE PRESENTER Lauren Hunter, LCSW, PMH-C, is a psychotherapist in a private practice located on Long Island, NY, specializing in women who have survived traumatic births and/or perinatal loss. Lauren is the owner of North Star Wellness & Therapy, a media contributor, a guest lecturer at NYU, and social media content creator to destigmatize grief and emotions surrounding birth trauma. Beyond individual therapy, Lauren presents to audiences of OBGYNs in trauma-informed care for the perinatal population and looks forward to supporting fellow clinicians in further serving the needs of the perinatal loss community through PGT principles.
