Overview:

Dr. Szuhany will discuss types of sleep disturbance in bereavement and how to recognize and treat them using case examples. She will also discuss how sleep may impact grief therapy, including effects on learning, memory consolidation, and emotional processing. Dr. Szuhany will also summarize other sleep research in complicated grief.

Presenter:

Dr. Kristin Szuhany is a Clinical Instructor in the Anxiety and Complicated Grief Program in the Department of Psychiatry at NYU Langone Health. She completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at Boston University, her internship at Montefiore Medical Center, and her postdoctoral fellowship at NYU Langone Health. Dr. Szuhany has extensive experience implementing evidence-based treatments for adults with anxiety disorders, PTSD, grief, and depression, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and behavioral activation. Her research interests include examining the efficacy of exercise interventions for anxiety and mood disorders, exploring the psychological and biological mechanisms of change involved in treatment response for anxiety, trauma and loss related conditions, and identifying factors that promote behavioral change. She is a member of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies, the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, and the Society for Behavioral Medicine.
