This session explores complicated grief as it shows up in rural  life, where loss often affects not only families but also farms, businesses, and community  roles. We will talk about generational loss, including the loss of people, land, health, and  identity, and how these experiences are carried forward within rural families. The discussion will also examine how abrupt change can reshape roles and responsibilities and what that  means for mental wellness over time.

OVERVIEW

In this session, Lauren Van Ewyk, CEO of the National Farmer Mental Health Alliance will share how complicated grief shows up in rural life, where loss often affects not only families but also farms, businesses, and community roles.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Identify the unique issues those in agriculture face, when grief concurrently occurs.
2. Describe the need for Agriculturally Informed Care in rural communities.
3. Identify culturally informed strategies that aid in caring for those impacted by grief in rural/agricultural communities.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Lauren Van Ewyk, M.Sc.MHC, RSW
Co-Founder, CEO, is an engaging speaker, registered social worker, foster mom and agricultural mental health advocate. She has appeared in numerous radio, television and print articles concerning the issues of adoption, foster care, mental wellness and mental health in the agriculture sector. Lauren works with businesses, individuals and families all across Canada to find hope and healing. She and her husband raise sheep in southwestern Ontario. 

Target Audience: health and mental health professionals, graduate-level students, and those who work closely with bereaved people, like hospice administrators, clergy, and support group facilitators.
